Applied Science Department

Overview

Department of Applied Sciences is one of the ineluctable departments of the Institute. It imparts excellent quality education in the area of Applied Sciences (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry) and Humanities i.e., Communication skills for the eventual technocrats of all streams.

The department of Applied Sciences aims to provide an enduring foundation in the fundamental sciences. Applied science is the application of human knowledge to build or design useful things. Fields of engineering are closely related to applied sciences. Students of engineering are provided with the basic tools of analysis as well as the knowledge of the principles on which engineering is based. Applied science differs from fundamental science, which seeks to describe the most basic objects and forces, having less emphasis on practical applications. The department also strives to inculcate the scientific temper and the spirit of enquiry in students. It encourages the students to understand and therefore apply the physical laws to the development of their fields of study.

The Department has well equipped laboratories for Physics, Chemistry & Numerical analysis, and communication skills. The Department of Applied sciences is of vital Significance in technical institutions. It is essentially the foundation stone on which the structure of various professional courses rests upon. Applied science is a bridge that connects pure, basic science like physics or chemistry with engineering practices. Faculty and students in applied science employ fundamental physical and chemical principles to create innovative new technologies. These novel solutions are then handed off to engineering disciplines to be refined, enhanced and used to address important societal problems. The department of Applied Sciences at IIMET strives to make the budding technocrats well-equipped and well versed in their prospective professional careers.

Vision

The vision of Applied Sciences Department at IIMET is to serve as a model for 21st century education in engineering and applied Sciences by promoting technical excellence and a broader understanding of engineering in the wider world and to build upon the interdisciplinary strengths in the foundational Sciences, create a “critical mass” in select new and emerging areas, and enhance application based research. Applied Sciences enhance the linkages between engineering and other professions with the aim of tackling increasing complex challenges that lie at the interfaces of science, technology, and society.

HOD Message

I take extreme pleasure in introducing you to the Department of Applied Sciences at IIMET, which is the foundation of Engineering. Department of Applied Sciences endeavors for ever-increasing knowledge, enhancing the critical thinking, ability to change information into knowledge and power of analyzing the things technically of each and every individual of ever changing society through students.

We always intend to impart knowledge through a closed knit family of highly competent faculty. Department of Applied Sciences plays a vital role in an engineering college catering to the teaching of basic sciences and humanities courses for engineering students of all branches.

The purpose of applied sciences in engineering study is to lay a strong foundation of basic principles of various disciplines such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Communication Skills in the mind of the learners, so that they proceed to rest of their years of study with up to date knowledge and training of basic engineering skills. The well established laboratories aims not only to cover syllabus but to motivate students to learn beyond the syllabus which definitely develops complete knowledge of the subject (both the practical and theoretical depth of knowledge) and develop skills of students to become promising engineers of the future.

I would like to conclude with the words of Thomas Friedman who has rightly figured "World is flat. Opportunities are immense. It’s just a question of identifying opportunities and making the best of them”. I wish all the technocrats luck, to make the best of their future.

Academics

An excellent way to enhance theeducational atmosphere is with teaching aids. The lecture theatres at IIMET make the best use of latest technologies using the student´s imagination and thinking outside the box and eventually discovering new and unique teaching aids for the classroom. Students find it a privilege to be here because of the academic environment and the facilities they have here. Of course ours is a very pleasant and a beautiful campus!

Department of Mathematics

We have distinguished faculties having National and International research publications of repute. Our teaching is oriented towards preparing the students to go for research in Mathematics and Robotics Engineering. Thus the students who join here get a strong background in mathematics to develop an analytical mind and brain in future generations at the engineering level. This will definitely help the students to grow into healthy, strong, intelligent and affectionate human beings. Engineering students cover basic mathematics including calculus, optimization techniques, quantitative techniques etc. in their eight semester course. All this knowledge helps to establish, and run the industry and corporate world.

Department of Chemistry

The Department has well equipped laboratories and other infrastructural facilities. The department is strengthen with the faculty members having good teaching experience and doctoral degree from reputed university. The Department also offers a vibrant atmosphere to students and faculty to nurture the spirit of scientific inquiry and the students are taught the basic fundamentals of chemistry used in the industries and research organizations.

Department of Humanities

Apart from the teaching of Communicative English in Ist and IInd Semester of first year, department offers Company Recruitment classes in IInd, IIIrd and grooming classes in IVth year for B.Tech students. The department plays a vital role in the over-all development of the students. We provide intensive mentoring to our students both in and beyond the classroom in a wide variety of forums. Ongoing lectures, film screenings, symposia, conferences, and colloquia on interdisciplinary themes make up our calendar.

English Language Laboratory

Language laboratory has been set with a view to provide learners a sustainable access to self-instructional, multimedia, language learning software as a complementary to classroom teaching. The Language lab is equipped with a UPS for 30 computers + 1 (Server), each provided with a headphone and is placed in a compact cubical room creating a user-friendly atmosphere. As the various software installed are self explanatory and are of different variety, each student has the liberty to choose a software of their choice and be benefitted. The software provides interactive session and hands-on practice with the following sections of computer based tests:

  • Listening
  • Structure
  • Reading
  • Writing

It is perfect for advanced learners
